One of my hobbies is foraging for wild foods. In May and June, I pursue feral asparagus and chose some spears to use in this image. At one time, the Connecticut River Valley in Massachusetts was renowned for its asparagus crop and it was planted extensively in our rich soils. Some birds enjoy the small red fruits, but can only digest the soft parts. The seed passes through intact and if it lands in a favorable spot, a new plant will sprout, to the delight of foragers! I will eat a few on the spot when I am foraging…sweet as sugar! Notice how the end of each stalk/spear is actually comprised of many smaller ‘spears’.
